For two to four weeks, stop eating the most common irritation culprits: soy, dairy, citrus, wheat, and nuts. You can also try eliminating other foods that you eat frequently or tend to crave.
2. If symptoms don't improve during the elimination period, you may not have a dietary IBS trigger. If you find relief, challenge yourself by reintroducing one food at a time for three to four days, noting how your body reacts. If you suffer a bout of IBS, take the food back out. If you feel fine, leave the food in your diet. Then progress to the next test food.
3. Assessing all five ingredients takes about two months, and by the end, you will likely have identified food categories you're better off avoiding. “It's not a cure,” “but it can give you a greater degree of control over your symptoms. If dairy is a big trigger, it doesn't mean you can't ever eat it. But you know that if you eat cheese fondue, you're going to experience symptoms for the next few days.”

If your digestion and immune system seem a bit off, it may be time to boost probiotics in your body—those beneficial bacteria that promote overall health. Here are foods to look for and ways to supplement with probiotics for yourself and kids.
Lately, your digestion feels off; in fact, you've caught a few more colds than usual and your overall vitality seems a bit compromised. Must be time to detox, right? The truth is that solely focusing on flushing toxins from your digestive system is a bit like cleaning the pool filters but forgetting to add chlorine.
"We tend to think of gut maintenance as only removing poisons and neglect to think of what we need to add to our system to keep it healthy that's where probiotics (or friendly bacteria) come in.

Foods high in probiotics

.• Aged cheese
• Beer (microbrews)
• Cottage cheese (look for bacterial strains in ingredient list)
• Kefir
• Kimchi
• Miso
• Pickled ginger
• Pickles (brine-cured, without vinegar)
• Sauerkraut
• Shoyu
• Tamari
• Tempeh
• Tofu
• Wine
• Yogurt
At any given time, there are about 100 trillion bacterial microbes living inside your body — enough microscopic beings to fill up a quart jar — most of which reside in the digestive tract. The digestive system is like a rainforest — teeming with life.
When friendly bacteria levels outnumber the bad, the body is in stasis. But the by-products of modern life often throw this delicate balance out of whack. “The combination of a typical Western diet, the high stress levels of modern life, and an over-reliance on antibiotics is the equivalent of clear-cutting parts of our internal ecology,” In other words, if you're a typical member of Western society, it's likely time to reforest your internal landscape.
There are thousands of probiotic strains, or friendly flora, found naturally in everything from breast milk to pickles. When ingested they actively promote overall health in many ways. Probiotics take up room and resources in the digestive tract and make it inhospitable to unfriendly microbes. They encourage regularity: In a 2006 Spanish study, daily probiotic consumption increased the frequency and volume of bowel movements, and a 2007 study found that the probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG greatly reduced acute diarrhea in children. Good bacteria also manufacture a range of B vitamins, which the body cannot create or store on its own and which offset the effects of stress; vitamin K, which bolsters bone density; and enzymes that aid metabolism.
And the benefits of probiotics extend well beyond the realm of nutrition and digestion. “Because the digestive system is our first line of defense against harmful bacteria carried in through food, drink, or air, probiotics help the immune system function correctly. In recent studies, probiotics reduced the duration and severity of colds, cut down recurrences of eczema outbreaks, increased the effectiveness of the flu vaccine, and decreased the risk of diabetes.
If you suffer from constipation or diarrhea, frequent colds, yeast infections, or inflammatory or autoimmune conditions (such as IBS, allergies, asthma, or rheumatoid arthritis), it's likely your probiotic levels need a boost. But even if you're relatively healthy, increasing your intake of probiotics through diet and supplements tips the balance in your favor.
Revamp your diet
Natural sources of probiotics include fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, or cultured foods, such as yogurt. Pay attention to your intake of prebiotics, too. Prebiotics are probiotics' favorite foods and help them thrive. But maintaining a healthy gut requires more than just eating a cup of yogurt with berries now and then. “In order to keep your bacteria levels in balance with diet alone, you have to commit to eating fermented and cultured foods every day. While that may be possible during quiet times, when you can eat the majority of your meals at home, one spurt of busyness can derail your efforts. Luckily, probiotics come in easy-to-take supplements.

What are prebiotics?

. Like many health-boosting nutrients, probiotics don't function in isolation. They require food, or “prebiotics” — including oligosaccharides and inulin (forms of soluble fiber found in some grains, fruits, and vegetables) and phenols (antioxidant compounds also found in plant foods). Eating more of the following prebiotic-rich foods can help support your probiotic numbers.

Asparagus
Jerusalem artichokes
Bananas
Leeks
Barley
Oats
Beans
Onions
Beer (microbrews)

Berries
Peas
Cherries
Red wine
Dark chocolate
Soybeans
Eggplant
Tea
Garlic
Whole rye
Herbs, fresh
Whole wheat
Taking probiotic supplements is like taking out an insurance policy — it protects you during the tough times. To get the most mileage out of your supplement, I suggests opening the pill casing and sprinkling the contents into a beverage or onto food so that the flora are introduced to your mouth and esophagus — important links in the digestive chain — as well as your stomach and intestines. Just be sure the food isn't scorching hot — anything above warm may kill the microbes.

Share this information with your family and friends that needs this help. Maybe your suffering from Adrenal Fatigue

One of the most common but often undiagnosed health problems in America leaves more than 85 percent of us feeling exhausted, overwhelmed and over medicated. Today's doctors miss this syndrome but chances are you haven't overlooked the havoc it is wreaking in your life. It's time to take a serious look at Adrenal fatigue and Exhaustion!
Stress level most of us live with daily is totally over the top! Consider some of these things when you are taking a quick inventory of your stress level:
1. Do you have lots of physical stress? This includes things like overwork, lack of sleep and athletic over-training.
2. Do you have chemical stress? There's all that stuff in the environment, but this also includes allergies, foods that cause an inflammatory response, processed sugar and carbs, chemical calories, food additives, food substitutes (like Slenda and Equal), caffeine and energy drinks along with "natural occurring" chemical imbalances in the endocrine gland system, and alternating bouts of mild constipation and diarrhea.
3. I your body exposed to thermal stress? Are you regularly over-heated and/or over-chilling your body?
4. How much emotional and mental stress do you have?
This is a relatively new perspective for people beyond the regular marriage/divorce/job change/moving stuff.Watching too much news on the television, being in the presence of loud people and even unspoken family tensions all contribute to your stress.

Stress activates the adrenal gland response. Your Adrenal glands sit just above your kidneys; they secrete more than 50 kinds of hormones necessary for life, energy production, fat storage and fluid balance.
When we are chronically stressed, we set the stage for stress-related illnesses that have three stages . First we have an alarm reaction in our body, which alerts the brain and nervous system, triggers the release of certain hormones and increases adrenal activity. The adrenals are working overtime in case you need to respond with fight/flight/freeze. Once the initial alarm stage is over, your body goes through a temporary recovery phase of 24-48 hours. You'll feel tired, listless and less able to respond to other stresses effectively. Your body will secrete less cortisol, which in unhealthy.
Adrenal fatigue can often cause paradoxical reactions, odd responses out of the norm of the expected. Here's a list of red flags signaling you need to pay attention and get help!
* You get tired instead of calm when taking steroids
* You have sudden anxiety attacks and feelings of impending doom while at rest
* You have erratic heart palpitations even though your cardiac function is normal
* You experience dizziness and lightheadedness while at rest when you're under extreme stress or when you eat certain foods like carbohydrates.
* Your blood pressure is all over the place

* You feel "beaten up" for days after vigorous exercise
* You wake up in the wee hours for no good reason and cannot get back to sleep
* High losses of vitamin C or magnesium make you constipated
* You become far more emotionally fragile than usual and find yourself crying for no apparent reason.
* You feel good after taking your supplements but crash shortly after.
The second phase is called resistance with chronic severe and on-going stress, the adrenal glands try to adapt and rebuild themselves. In some cases, they even increase in size.On the way to total adrenal exhaustion, the adrenal glands hemorrhage, the thymus gland atrophies, which decreases our immune strength, and we no longer have the ability to cope (much less function) in our day-today lives. Some of us seek help at this point, but because adrenal fatigue is so common most of us brush it off. We tell ourselves, "Everyone deals with stuff, I just need to get it together". Wrong!

The Third stage is adrenal exhaustion we lose the ability to adapt to stress at all.Our bodies literally give up. Our adrenal glands no longer provide protective stress responses and they cannot produce the important hormones that influence almost all of the major physiological processes in our bodies. These hormones affect how we use carbs and fats, how we convert fats and proteins to energy, how fat is distributed across our bodies, our blood sugar balance, gastrointestinal function and heart rate. By stage three most people drag themselves to the doctor's office and it's not pretty!

So all that said What do you do Now!
So let's take a proactive step first detoxify your life. This means getting rid of foods that cause inflammation or interrupt your hormone balance, but it also means cleaning up your environment. Research has shown that reading the news or listening to it on the radio is less stress-inducing than watching it on TV. And removing stressors from your life may also mean you need to let go of some toxic people or reduce your interactions with them." You need to reduce the things that are pushing your stress buttons!" Others things you can do to support your body and actively manage your stress levels. Slow gentle movement like Tai Chi, stretching forms of yoga, walking, strolling through the park or walking around the block at lunch break. Contemplative
6 to 9 months for minor adrenal fatigue
12 to 18 months for moderate fatigue
Up to 24 months for severe adrenal fatigue
If you are all the way into stage 3 adrenal exhaustion, you need to hit the reset button on your life and get healthy NOW!. The final stage of full exhaustion is Addison's Disease and recovery is difficult at best.
And remember, you don't get here overnight. And you get back to feeling great. Just don't stress about it.
If you have a family member or you want to talk to me personally about this. email me or call me I would be glad to help you with your health.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://drphilipdietrich.blogspot.com/2011/08/tired-but-wired-maybe-your-suffering.html' title='Tired But Wired? Thousands of people struggle to deal with life's great demands. But too much stress can drain our vital energy, and if the energy balance is not restored, a physical illness ensues.

Exhaustion has become an epidemic in the 21st century. There are no easy solutions to remove stress completely from our lives, but there are ways to fight the afternoon slump and sluggishness. Here is how:

Drink Fluids

Believe it or not, dehydration is one of the major causes of fatigue. Dehydrated blood becomes thicker and flows much slower than normal, thus providing slower oxygen delivery to the brain. Therefore, your brain becomes tired and sluggish. In addition, the brain is composed of 80% water. When it becomes dehydrated, it works much slower. To prevent mental and physical sluggishness due to dehydration, drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water or other caffeine-free beverages a day. Try to drink filtered water, if you need to spice it up try putting lemon or lime, if just plain water is to bland.
Eat Snacks

Eating healthy snacks between meals and before bedtime will help your blood sugar level remain steady. That will enable you to avoid energy dips throughout the day. For lasting energy, combine fruits, vegetables, and grains with protein. Consider healthy snacks like fruits, vegetables, cheese, and crackers. Avoid high fat and high sugar snacks. They will give you a quick energy boost, but 30 minutes later you'll find yourself hungry again.

Physical Activity

Physical activity elevates mood and promotes a sense of well-being. While increasing your level of energy, it also helps lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and your risk for developing diseases like heart disease. So get off the couch and start a regular exercise routine! I recommend to my patients to get the most benefit from exercise, to engage in moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes on most days of the week. Or just walking at a steady pace for 30 min.

The best way to relieve stress is to avoid energy draining activities like these:

TV

When you kick back in front of the TV, you think that you are in for an evening of relaxation. Think again! Many programs, especially the news, can cause high levels of stress. Instead of watching television to relax, get off the couch and go for a walk or a bike ride!

Sugar

Sweet treats are comforting, but may cause your blood sugar to drop, making you want to take a nap. In addition, sugary treats provide you with empty calories that ruin your waste line. Instead, reach for a healthy snack of fruits, vegetables, pretzels, and cheese.

Caffeine
Beverages containing caffeine can give you a quick jolt of energy, but it does not last long. Instead, keep your body hydrated with water and other caffeine-free fluids.

Hopefully this helps you know why you feel tired & fatigue all the time and don't know why. If your fatigue, needs a little more attention then the above, give me a call lets discus this further.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://drphilipdietrich.blogspot.com/2011/06/fatigued-boost-your-energy-in-instant.html' title='Fatigued? But in any form, pomegranate offers a multitude of health benefits.
In Fruits and vegetables, richness of color stems from a concentration of nutrients. Given their vibrant ruby red hue, pomegranates, not surprisingly are especially high in health-promoting antioxidant

Studies on Pomegranate:

Studies have focused on juice and extracts. Benefits include lowering "bad" LDL cholesterol
increasing blood flow to the heart among people with heart disease, protecting against prostate and breast cancers, improving erectile dysfunction, enhancing recovery from exercises, protecting against heart disease and diabetes, and increasing resistance to the flu. Newer research shows that pomegranate can help alleviate common symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes. Pomegranate is a natural source of phytoestrogens, known to help promote hormonal health. When applied topically to the skin, pomegranate reduces damage from the sun. In mouthwashes, it reduces plaque and protects against gum disease. And for overall health, antioxidants protect against environmental damage and the ravages of aging.
In studies, a therapeutic amount is most often 8 ounces of juice daily or the equivalent in an extract, taken for at least a few months. Health improvements generally result from making pomegranate a routine part of one's daily diet.
These are some research Highlights:

Research in Israel found that the natural sugar in pomegranate does not act like sugar in other fruit juices, which raise blood sugar. In a study of 20 diabetics, published in atherosclerosis, pomegranate did not raise blood sugar but reduced the development of arartherosclerosis.
In most juices, sugars are present in free and harmful forms said lead researcher Michael Aviram, Phd. In pomegranate juice however the sugars are attached to unique antioxidants, which actually make these sugars protective against atherosclerosis.

CANCER-Fighting Compounds:

At the University of California, Los Angles, a study of 50 men who had been treated for prostate cancer found that pomegranate juice (8 ounces daily of POM Wonderful) quadrupled the length of time during which there was little or no cancer progression. In men 65 to 70 who have been treated for prostate cancer, we can give them pomegranate juice and it may be possible for them to outlive their risk of dying from their cancer, said lead research Allan Pantuck, PhD .We're hoping we may be able to prevent or delay the need for other therapies usually used in this population, such as hormone treatment or chemotherapy, both of which bring with them harmful side effects.

Pomegranate Recipes:
The pomegranate's bright red seeds, or arils, are little juice sacs with crunchy inner seeds that are rich in fiber. Eat them as a snack, sprinkle on fish or game meats or fold into rice or other grain dishes. These are some other ways to enjoy the fruit.

• Make a quick salad dressing. Blend pomegranate seeds or juice with balsamic or rice vinegar and extra virgin olive oil; add honey to taste. If using seeds, strain before serving.

• Add pomegranate juice to smoothies for an antioxidant boost..

• Liven up guacamole: Mix one or two tablespoons of pomegranate seeds for added visual appeal and taste.
• Brighten up a salad: Sprinkle pomegranate seeds onto green or fruit salad after tossing.
• Add a burst of flavor to plain yogurt: Mix a little honey into yogurt, and then fold in pomegranate seeds for a sweet-tart combination.
• Sprinkle pomegranate seeds on cereal, pancakes, waffles, pudding, ice cream or other desserts. Or decorate a cake with the ruby jewels

• Enjoy a ruby-red glass of pomegranate juice in a place of wine, for party get together or special or festive occasions.

Questions? When consuming fat, the liver has to metabolize, store, manufacture and package fat into particles called
lipoproteins. These lipoproteins can then be transported throughout the body to cells that need them. Normally, this system works well.

However, with a lifetime of high fat and carbohydrate intake, the liver gets taxed and is unable to properly handle the fat that enters the body from the diet. Triglycerides, a type of fat in
the body, build up in the liver cells and over time, leading to a fatty liver. A fatty liver can cause inflammation, fibrosis (excess fibrous tissue) of the liver tissue, and cirrhosis. Insulin resistance which can be caused by excess calorie intake over time, raises triglyceride levels as well, and thus may contribute to fatty liver disease development. High insulin levels, which occur with excess calorie intake, prevent fats from being broken down. Thus, it is easy to see why both obesity and insulin resistance can cause fatty liver disease.
NAFLD consists of two types of classifications:

hepatic steatosis and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).
The latter is more severe form as it involves both fat accumulation and fibrosis and/or cirrhosis.

About 20% of those with NASH result in cirrhosis or liver cancer. A simple blood test can detect and diagnose NAFLD.

The best way to prevent it is to maintain a healthy weight (lose weight if obese/overweight) through diet and exercise, reduce total fat and carbohydrate intake, increase fiber intake and most of the fat you do consume plant-based.

That translates into eating mostly plant foods (vegetables, legumes/beans, whole grains and fruit, plant oils such as olive oil) and lean animal foods (low fat diary, eggs, fish,
poultry and lean meat). Adequate choline intake is important, too. The liver will become healthier as excess body weight is reduce.
Exercise is not only important for weight control, but it also increases muscle cells oxygen consumption and ability to burn fat, thus keeping fat from being stored in the liver. Exercise has
also been shown to help with blood sugar control, insulin resistance, blood pressure, and liver enzymes.

Certain medications are commonly prescribed to treat the condition. Taurine, vitamin E and Milk thistle supplementation have shown encouraging results.

Probiotics may also beneficially alter bowel flora and control inflammation.

Reference:
Patel, Anish A. What they don't realize is that means most of us..
A little more than 90 percent of the population in this country ultimately develops high blood pressure. Noting that one-third of adults already have hypertension and blood pressure slowly creeps up after about age 40 (due largely to the cumulative effects of excessive salt intake), leading to a host of cardiovascular problems. Here's what happens: Sodium draws in water, leading to increased blood volume. Like a hose on full blast, that boosted pressure strains at the heart and increases arteriosclerosis in the arteries. And if an artery becomes sufficiently narrowed, it can lead to a heart attack or stroke.
The good news: According to one study, cutting salt intake from 9.7 to 6.6 grams per day can reduce average blood pressure significantly within six weeks. If we all cut our sodium intake by a modest 3 grams per day, or roughly one-half teaspoon, it still wouldn't get us to recommended levels, but it would be a good start with extensive impacts.

STOMACH AND KIDNEY PROBLEMS
Recent studies suggest that excess sodium can also interfere with the production of protective gastric mucos (leaving the stomach vulnerable to pathogens and carcinogens) and breed a virulent strain of bacterium H. pylori, the leading cause of stomach ulcers. And a sweeping 2009 research review concluded that "limitation on salt and salted food consumption is a practical strategy preventing gastric cancer". And scientist have long known that chronic exposure to excess salt in the bloodstream is hard on the kidneys themselves, potentially leading to kidney stones and in some cases, renal failure.

FATIGUE AND OBESITY

Even in the short run, a sodium-loaded meal has consequences. Ever feel tired or have a headache after eating a bag of chips? That could be dehydration.. You eat a lot of salt and it goes into your blood stream where it pulls fluid away from the organs, making you tired. Salt also makes you thirsty (often for sugary, calorie-laden drinks) which has many health officials worried that salt could be contributing to the growing childhood obesity epidemic. Cutting salt consumption in half would help kids skip about 2.3 sweet drinks each week, avoiding 61 grams of sugar and 250 empty calories, according to British researchers.
The first step is to take a good look at what you eat during a typical week. If peperoni pizza, french fries, canned soup, grilled cheese, crackers or mac and cheese frequent the list, it's time to cut back in creative ways. Research shows that after 8 to 12 weeks if cutting sodium intake your taste buds will begun to prefer less salt.

SO NOW HOW DO YOU AVOID AND REDUCE SODIUM INTAKE ????

Recognize hidden salt mines, such as lunch meats, many breads and baked foods (pita, corn tortillas) soba and Chinese noodles, many cheeses (cottage, American) tomato juice and spaghetti sauce, instant oatmeal and coca mixes.

Be a savvy label reader. Reduced" sodium means 25 percent less than normal; "light" means 50 percent less; "low" means no more than 140 mg per serving; "very low" means 35 mg or less and "sodium free" means less than 5mg. When checking the Nutrition Facts Panel, look for no more than 5 percent of the Daily Value of sodium per serving or 115 mg for adults.

Seek out low-sodium versions. Choose unsalted butter and reduced- sodium tamari or soy sauce, soups, ketchup, salad dressings and other packaged foods.

Eat more potassium. Orange-colored fruits and vegetables (from apricots to acorn squash) bananas, artichokes. bok choy, spinach, Swiss chard, potatoes with skins on and other potassium-rich foods can help counteract the adverse effects of sodium.

Finally..Order Smart..Ask the waiter if your meal Even be made with less salt or get sauces on the side. Choose grilled meat rather than fried or breaded. Go easy on sodium heavy condiments for your burger. Ditto with salad dressing and skip the croutons. When cooking at home, use lemon juice, garlic and fresh herbs to flavor your meals.

If you need any further help email me or give me a call.. Researchers at the USDA Human Nutrition Center put blueberries high on the list in antioxidant activity compared with 40 other common fruits and vegetables.They contain vitamins C and K, fiber, manganese, omega-3, and various phytochemicals and antioxidants -- including anthocyanins.Native to North America, cluberries belong to the Vaccinium plant family which includes cranberry and bilberry.

Heart

The Women’s Health Study is a large research program established in 1991 byy the national Institutes of Health (NIH) that encompasses a collection of studies that aim to address the most common causes of dealth, disability and poor quality of life in postmenopausal women. One of the study’s findings suggests that women who consume a diet high in anthocyanins have a significantly reduced risk of developing heart disease. A study in the September 2009 issue of the
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition evaluated 120 people with dyslipidemia (abnormal lipid levels) aged 40 to 65 who received 160 mg of anthocyanins extracted from bilberry and black currant, or a placebo twice a day for 12 weeks. At the end of the trial, subjects receiving anthocyanin supplements had lower LDL (“bad” cholesterol) levels (dropping 13.6% from the beginning of the study) and higher “good” cholesterol (a 13.7% increase in HDL cholesterol). The study authors predict that these changes in lipid profiles seen in subjects consuming anthocyanins could translate into a 27% reduction in their risk of coronary heart disease1

Brain Health

With aging, comes stress—and not just the kind you get from your teenager’s fluctuating mood. Human aging is often marked by wrinkles and gray hair. Internally, aging naturally causes an increase in inflammation and oxidative stress inside our cells. Aging also lowers our body’s ability to counteract stress and inflammation. Brain cells are particularly vulnerable to this kind of damage. With too much damage, diseases such as dementia are more likely to appear. It makes sense, then, to minimize this oxidation by consuming
anti -oxidants. Many large, population-based studies show that people who eat a lot of fruits and vegetables have a reduced risk of developing age-related diseases like Alzheimer’s disease. Lead researcher at the US Department of Agriculture Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, Boston Joseph A. James noted “dietary supplementation with fruit or vegetable extracts high in antioxidants (e.g.,blueberry or spinach extracts) might decrease the enhanced vulnerability to oxidative stress that occurs in aging. These reductions might be expressed as improvements in motor and cognitive behavior.2 ” Other findings suggest that “blueberry supplementation might prevent cognitive deficits by directly enhancing neuronal signaling and offsetting any putative deleterious effects...2 Recently, researchers at the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center found that daily consumption of commercially available wild blueberry juice improved neurocognitive function in older adults with early memory decline. The study asked nine older adults to drink 2 to 2 1/2 cups of wild blueberry juice daily for 12 weeks. Results showed a significant improvement in memory and learning test outcomes compared with the placebo group 3. It should be noted this study was supported by the Wild Blueberry Association of North America and the National Institutes of Health. Mice fed a blueberry supplement were found to have better protection against a number of age-related neurodegenerative processes in the brain compared to those not receiv ing a blueberry supplement. The blueberry-supplemented elderly mice also showed improved performance on tests of spatial learning and memory4

This study was also supported by the Wild Blueberry Association and the US Highbush BlueberryCouncil.

References:

1. The effect was been even seen in young people.
The caffeine-loaded beverage causes blood to become sticky, a pre-cursor to cardiovascular problems such as stroke

Who should Definitely Avoid Energy Drinks?

It is fairly self-evident that children should never consume these kinds of drinks, but due to the detrimental health impact of their contents, it would definitely be wise to avoid energy drinks if you:
* Are Pregnant or lactating
* Are sensitive to caffeine
* Suffer from anxiety
* Suffer from high stress
* Suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome
* Have high blood pressure
* Are predisposed to cardiovascular disease
* Have any kind of blood clotting disorder

As a lead researcher Scott Willoughby stated, Red Bull can be deadly when combined with stress or high blood pressure, as it can impair proper blood vessel function and raise your risk of blood clots.

Mix with Alcohol for a Potentially Deadly High

Mixing energy drinks with alcohol, which is combining a stimulant with a depressant, has become an increasingly popular occurrence at bars. When mixed with alcohol, drinks like Red Bull are instantly morphed into popular club drinks like "Vodka Bulls", and "Yager Bombs"

The combined effect of these substances is unknown, but researchers say overloading your body with heavy stimulants and heavy depressants could lead to heart failure, and according to previous news stories about fatal outcomes from this deadly mixture, that's not just a theory.
Countries like France and Denmark banned sales of Red Bull following several reported deaths of people who mixed it with alcohol.
The Red Bull brand has even made it into the scientific literature. The journal Medicine,science and law published an article in 2001 on the effects of alcohol and Red Bull combined with yet another stimulant ephdra.

The result? Acute psychosis.

One hour after drinking Red Bull your blood system becomes abnormal, as might be expected from a patient with cardiovascular disease

Red Bull is banned in Norway, Uruguay and Denmark because of the health risk.

Do Energy Drinks Really Live Up to their name?

When you break down the contents of one of those eight-ounce cans, the primary ingredients are caffeine and the sugar (in the form of glucuronolactone, sucrose and glucose). So the answer is yes, energy drinks will provide you with a quick burst of energy.

The Austria-based company that created Red Bull warns consumers not to drink more than two a day of their wins-in-a-can, but I could not find any reference to that fact on Red Bull's website. Only a statement that said you should compare your consumption to that of a coffee, with one can of Red Bull equaling one cup of brewed java.

The problem with that recommendation is the fact that no one really knows the net effect of chugging Red Bull like you would coffee. Coffee has caffeine, yes, but it doesn't contain all those other artificial and energy-boosting ingredients, including no less than TWO artificial sweeteners (in addition to all the other sugar).

Aspartame alone has been shown to have multiple neurotoxic, metabolic,allergenic, fetal and carcinogenic effects

How to increase Your Energy Without Energy Drinks

If you're drinking energy drinks for the reason most people do-to get more energy- know that there are far superior options than artificial energy drinks. Humans are not naturally sluggish or constantly tired. This lethargic state is something that many of us have brought on ourselves.

Your lack of energy is likely due to a combination of factors including
* Poor food Choice
* Low-Quality food
* Stressful lifestyle
* Negative emotions
* Lack of sleep
* Lack of exercise

Increasing your energy levels, then is as easy as remedying these factors

* Eating right for your nutritional type
* Increasing your intake of Omega-3 fats
* Eliminating grains and sugars from your diet
* Releasing emotional stress and negativity
* Sleeping when you're tired
* Exercising

For more details go to my website, the Tool that you will regain your energy is to check out my nutritional charts and let's get you starting a exercise and nutritional program that's easy to follow.

http://www.halfhourtohealth.tv/

or call 650 291-0709 or 1-800 422-9660 Pacific Time

Shocking Sugar Content in Common Foods

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 212px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_sLtEQNxtlMQ/TAQ8hFGU3rI/AAAAAAAAADU/e1bFW1NwMps/s320/83869211.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5477569585791426226" />

How much sugar are we really eating every day?

High-Fructose corn syrup and refined sugar are considered by many experts to be the biggest contributors to obesity and poor health.
I complied a list for fun and I looked up the sugar content of a few common foods.
I hope your as shocked as I am..

1. I always like to approach it from an alternative approach, so we can get down to the real cause.There are as an example many reasons why women are having problems with their hormones for instances, and just taking peramin is not the answer, there are as an example stress causing adrenal exhaustion with reduced progesterone output. This tilts the estrogen to progesterone ratios in favor of estrogen. Excessive estrogen in turn causes insomnia and anxiety, which further taxes the adrenal gland. Well after a few years in this type of vicious cycle, the adrenal glands become exhausted. This dysfuntion leads to blood sugar imbalance, hormonal imbalances, and chronic fatigue. What about increased sugar, fast food and processsed food, how about increased coffee consumption, as caffeine is linked with higher estrogen, I could go on and on but sorry, I need to get back to the office, I hope you can see why just there is more to it then just take this, until next time. Have you flipped through a magazine or watched television lately? Then you have probably noticed an influx of drug companies adveristing their products. What do you think is behind those glossy ads and snazzy sound bites. You guessed it what else-money.So whats the harm in these drug ads? The real danger is that they provide misleading information to the consumer. Here is a quote from the Journal of the American Medical Association: The pharmaceutical industry is driven part, by financial motives and is providing information of suspect quality, and the minimal benefits. I am concerned that consumers are being manipulated by these sophisticated marketing campaigans that lead to the over-perscription of several medications. The harmfull side effects of some of these drugs are baffling. There are about 100,000 people are hospitalized each year due to adverse reactions to these medications Lets take a look at some of these meds.

1. In a mad dash for a drug to end impotence, men fail to realize that a drug may be causing the problem in the first place. Among the medications that list erectile dysfunction as a possible side effect are drugs prescribed for migraines, gastrointestinal ulcers, incontinence, skin rashes heart problems, prostate cancer.....I am sure you get the point! Now lets look at the other end. This is very interesting.Medications commonly prescribed for emotional problems--such as depression, eating disorders, alcoholism, attention and anxiety problems--guess what? They trigger sexual problems.

2.Ritalin This drug is most prevalent in the US, where more then 1.3 million children take it for Attention Deficit, Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)--a figure five times more then the rest of the world. What about a child being normal with high energy? Well, I sure had high energy as a child, my mother never took me to the doctor and said please give him Ritalin.

3. Antihistamines. This is an interesting one. Lets look at some of the common ones: Seldane, Zyrtec, Claritin and Allegra. The most common one I see right now , with the most aggressive marketing campaign is Claritin. This drug has been cornering 56% of the $1.8 billion market with its class of medication. What is really the underline cause of allergies. Most allergies are caused by eating the wrong foods or because the person is under alot of stress, but looking for that quick fix without dealing with the real cause people are ruining their health in the interm and starting another problem somewhere else in the system.

I could go on and on with other health issues but I am sure you get the point, if needing further help in health issues feel free to give me a call at 650-291-0709

until next time Dr. Dietrich

Reasons to Eliminate Dairy

Today’s Milk

Modern feeding methods substitute high-protein, soy-based feeds for fresh green grass and breeding methods to produce cows with abnormally large pituitary glands so that they produce three times more milk than the old fashioned scrub cow.

These cows need antibiotics to keep them well. Injection of this hormone forces cows to increase their milk production by about 10%. rBGH makes cows sick. Monsanto has been forced to admit to about 20 toxic effects, including mastitis, on its POSILAC label. rBGH milk is contaminated by abnormally high pus levels, due to the mastitis commonly induced by rBGH, and antibiotics used to treat the mastitis. rBGH milk is chemically and nutritionally different than natural milk.

rBGH milk is contaminated with rBGH, traces of which are absorbed through the gut.

rBGH milk is supercharged with high levels of a natural growth factor (IGF-1), which is readily absorbed through the gut. Excess levels of IGF-1 have been incriminated as a cause of breast, colon, and prostate cancers. IGF-1 blocks natural defense mechanisms against early submicroscopic cancers.

Some researchers and “experts” suggest that IGF-1 from outside sources cannot be absorbed because the digestive enzymes destroy it while it’s in the GI tract. In 1999, the ADA published research demonstrating that people who consumed 3 servings of milk daily had a 10% higher serum IGF-1 level and almost a 10% lower level IGF Binding Protein 4 (IGBP-4) than those drinking less than 1-1/2 servings.

Constipation

A double-blind trial found that chronic constipation among infants and problems associated with it were triggered by intolerance to cows’ milk in two-thirds of the infants studied. Symptoms disappeared in most infants when cows’ milk was removed from their diet. New England Journal of Medicine 1998;339: pp,1100-4

Dairy Induces Immunization to Insulin

Cow's milk feeding is an environmental trigger of immunity to insulin in infancy that may explain the epidemiological link between the risk of type 1 diabetes and early exposure to cow's milk formulas. Diabetes, Vol 48, Issue 7 1389-1394.

High intakes of milk, but not meat, increase serum insulin and insulin resistance in 8-year-old boys.

European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. 2005 Mar;59(3):393-8

The possible role of hormones in milk from cows in the development of breast, ovarian and corpus uteri cancers.

The continued increase in incidence of some hormone-related cancers worldwide is of great concern. Although estrogen-like substances in the environment were blamed for this increase, the possible role of estrogens from food has not been widely discussed. Cows' milk contains a considerable quantity of estrogens. When we name cows' milk as one of the important routes of human exposure to estrogens, the general response of Western people is that "man has been drinking cows' milk for around 2000 years without apparent harm." However, the milk that we are now consuming is quite different from that consumed 100 years ago. Modern dairy cows are usually pregnant and continue to lactate during the latter half of pregnancy, when the concentration of estrogens in blood, and hence in milk, increases. The correlation of incidence and mortality rates with environmental variables in worldwide countries provides useful clues to the etiology of cancer. Among dietary risk factors, we are most concerned with milk and dairy products, because the milk we drink today is produced from pregnant cows, in which estrogen and progesterone levels are markedly elevated. Medical Hypotheses. 2005;65(6):1028-37. Lunch meats are particularly vulnerable to Listeria because they are generally not cooked or reheated after purchase.

Consumers will not be informed as to whether their meat and poultry products have been treated with the spray. To be honest, this policy provides meat vendors with more leeway to get away with poor quality control, poor hygiene and meat that's too old because it takes away some of the bacteria.

If you haven't been concerned about processed meats yet, here's one more reason: At one point, the FDA had concerns this spray-on concoction might contain some toxic residue from the bacterial mix of sprays. The agency claims human contact with these residues in small quantities doesn't cause health problems, but are you willing to bet they won't?

Protein Sources

The overriding theme behind this newsletter: Where your meat ultimately comes from and how it's prepared makes all the difference in the world to your health. Before you take your next bite of processed meat, commercial steak or chicken, consider all the problems that come with them.

We suggest you try to seek out a cleaner source for your protein needs.

25% of your diet needs to be from a protein source. Good protein sources are: Beans, seeds, nuts, sprouts, eggs, chicken, turkey, fish, lean beef, ostrich, and bison. These need to be from a clean source that is labeled “organically grown”, “free range”, “no antibiotics”, “no hormones”, etc.

Importance of Protein: 40% of body protein is found in skeletal muscle the remaining 60% is found in body organs and are used to make enzymes, some hormones, immunoproteins and buffers

Total Health Clinic approved

Corn & Black Bean Salsa

15oz black beans, cooked

1 C corn kernels

½ C fresh cilantro, chopped

3 T fresh lime juice

2 T balsamic vinegar

½ t ground cumin

¼ t salt

Combine all ingredients. Yes…chlorine. This involves chemically changing the structure of the sugar molecules. Any animal that eats chlorine (especially on a regular basis) is at risk of cancer. The Merk Manuel and OSHA 40 SARA 120 Hazardous Waste Handbook states that chlorine is a carcinogen and emergency procedures should be taken when exposed via swallowing, inhaling, or through the skin. If you already consume sucralose, will this be the only source of chlorine you are being exposed to? What about tap water [not just drinking it but taking showers and baths], swimming pools, steam rooms, etc.?

Research in animals has shown that sucralose can cause many problems in rats, mice, and rabbits, such as:

Shrunken thymus glands (up to 40% shrinkage) (a gland that is the very foundation of our immune system)

Swelling of the liver and kidneys.

Calcification of the kidneys

Reduced growth rate

Decreased red blood cell count

Hyperplasia of the pelvis

Extension of the pregnancy period

Aborted pregnancy

Decreased fetal body weights and placental weights

Diarrhea

The main issue is how few studies currently exist on sucralose. As of <st1:date year="2004" day="18" month="11">November 18, 2004</st1:date> there were these many studies cited in the National Library of Medicine:

Saccharin: 3001 studies*

Aspartame: 774 studies*

Cyclamates: 653 studies*

Sucralose: 76 studies*

* Number of studies determined by MEDLINE search.

Most of those studies were on animals and few human studies of safety have been published on sucralose. One small study of diabetic patients using the sweetener showed a statistically significant increase in glycosylated hemoglobin (HgbA1c), which is a blood test used to monitor Diabetes. According to the FDA, "increases in glycosolation in hemoglobin imply lessening of control of diabetes”.

Something else to consider is that there are NO Long-term Human Research studies on sucralose. According to the Medical Letter on Drugs & Therapeutics, "Its long-term safety is unknown."

The manufacturer would have you believe that sucralose is not absorbed and metabolized by the body. According to the FDA's "Final Rule" report, 11% to 27% of sucralose is absorbed in humans, and the rest is excreted unchanged in feces. According to the Japanese Food Sanitation Council, as much as 40% of ingested sucralose is absorbed.

The pressing issue is understanding the fact that artificial sweeteners have not helped us keep our weight down. According to Consumers' Research Magazine "There is no clear-cut evidence that sugar substitutes are useful in weight reduction. On the contrary, there is some evidence that these substances may stimulate appetite."

Stop buying into the lie that artificial sweeteners: #1 will help you lose weight and #2 are safe for consumption. With no established system for monitoring and tracking post-approval adverse effects, how can it ever be established whether large-scale and long-term consumption of sucralose is safe? If you are continuing to consume sucralose and other artificial sweeteners, you are part of the grand experiment. But you don’t have to deny yourself all together. There are many other healthy and natural sweeteners you can easily use to replace the artificials and even white sugar!

Honey is a health-promoting sweetener. It keeps well and never spoils. Honey contains 2 different sugars…dextrose, which is assimilated very quickly, giving that “instant” boost of energy the body needs. It also contains levulose that is absorbed much more slowly and maintains the sugar level for some time. Honey’s double-action sugars quickly satisfy a craving for sweets and tend to maintain that sense of satisfaction for awhile. It also has anti-bacterial properties.

However, if you like the taste of an artificial sweetener, Stevia is the product for you. Stevia is an herb that has been used as a sweetener in South America for hundreds of years. After centuries of use in Paraguay, and decades in Japan, there has yet to be a complaint that Stevia, in any of its consumable forms, has produced any harmful side effects. For diabetics using artificial sweeteners, we recommend a gradual use of stevia. You can initially use stevia in some of your drinks, like coffee or tea. After a few weeks, as your comfort level with stevia increases, you can use more of the herbal extract. Stevia has not been shown to increase blood sugar levels, but because each individual's condition is different -- such experimentation should be done under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional. There are many cookbooks available that can give you some great recipes to use with stevia.

Sources:

Food and Drug Administration "Final Rule " for Sucralose, 21 CFR Part 172, Docket No. 87F-0086.

Lord GH, Newberne PM. Get a children’s liquid multiple vitamin with iron at the health food store. You can add it to the milk or give it directly via dropper.

Goat milk is better for babies than cow’s milk because the proteins and fats are smaller making them more easily broken down. Goat milk tends to have a better buffering quality, which is good for those with ulcers or other GI disorders. Goat milk can successfully replace cow milk in diets of those who are allergic to cow milk.

Caprine Estates, in Bellbrook, Ohio, is a local goat dairy with one of the largest goat herbs in the country. They do pasteurize their milk; it is extremely difficult to buy raw goat milk anywhere. We recommend the non-homogenized goat milk, but they sell both kinds.

Two national brands are Meyenberg and Perrine. Both are “ultrapasteurized” which increases shelf life but subjects the goat milk to high temperatures for a longer time than regular pasteurization. It also gives the milk a yellowish color, and a slight “taste”. Fresh goat milk is barely discernable from cow milk.

Both Caprine Estates and Meyenberg do not use hormones and steroids, and do not sell milk from goats on antibiotics. The price is comparable to commercial formula. Powdered goat milk is cheaper, but one smell will discourage you.

Caprine Estates
Willow Run Dairy, Bellbrook, OH 937-848-7406 www.caprineestates.com

Meyenberg, Santa Barbara, CA
1-800-891-GOAT www.meyenberg.com

Yorkshire, OH: E.A.T. They very rarely exist in nature and are the hardest fats to break down. If you are trying to lose weight, these fats take twice as long to breakdown as even a saturated fat! It takes 1 month to break down half of the normal fats consumed. It takes 3 months to metabolize half of the trans fats consumed. Trans fat is used to enhance flavor and extend shelf life and is created artificially by adding hydrogen to vegetable oil in a process called hydrogenation.

Trans fats are detrimental to one’s health because they raise the level of LDL cholesterol, the “bad” cholesterol, in the blood. Trans fats lower the level of HDL cholesterol, the “good” cholesterol, in the blood. This has a double negative effect on cholesterol because it lowers the ratio of Total Cholesterol to HDL cholesterol, which increases the risk of heart disease. Trans fat has also been found to cause an increased risk of certain cancers and digestive problems. One study found that women who eat higher levels of trans fats are almost 4 times more likely to have breast cancer. For these reasons, they are believed to be more detrimental to one’s health than saturated fats.

- Cancer Epi. Bio. fat in their product on the nutrition label. While this may assist people in making wiser food choices, it can also be misleading. Under FDA regulations, "if the serving contains less than 0.5 gram [of trans fat], the content, when declared, shall be expressed as zero." In other words, the FDA allows the companies to declare the product “Zero grams of trans fat” even though it still contains trans fat! Be a wise shopper. Any amount of trans fat is not good.
- Shockman, Luke, Trans Fat: ‘Zero’ foods add up, ToledoBlade, December 5, 2005.
- <span style="text-decoration: none; states that “If New Yorkers replace all sources of artificial trans fat, by even the most conservative estimates, We need significant amounts of essential fatty acids to function properly and enhance immunity. The nutritional deficiencies related to a fat-free diet have been linked to arthritis, cardiovascular disease, PMS, and headaches.

Nutty Statistics!
We took nuts out of our diet because they have too much fat in them according to the ADA.         Nuts are most valuable in the way they affect cholesterol.  The <span style="border-bottom: 1px dashed rgb(0, 102, 204);
